Jardin de la Vida
“The Garden of Life”
To address food insecurity and healthy food decision making, La Maestra created the Jardin de la Vida or Garden of Life in 2009 for underserved individuals in City Heights to experience an open garden space in this densely populated, urban neighborhood. Adults and children participate in intergenerational gardening days and gardening boxes filled with soil and seeds to all participants, so that they can learn to grow their own produce. Additionally, participants can use their CalFresh food stamps benefit to purchase additional seeds, and with the knowledge and skill obtained at gardening days can create their own sustainable, urban garden.
